Dorset residents and stakeholders are invited to have their say on the draft Dorset Domestic Abuse Strategy 2021-2024.

The draft strategy sets out how Dorset Council will work with organisations and communities in Dorset to tackle domestic abuse over the next three years.

“We want to know what you think of our proposals.  Have we got the priorities right? Is there anything we have missed? Tackling domestic abuse has been a priority for the council and organisations in Dorset for many years and this year the Government passed legislation in the form of the Domestic Abuse Act 2021 that places specific responsibilities on Councils, including creating a domestic abuse strategy.”

“We and our partners are committed to tackling it by preventing abuse from happening, supporting victims, and prosecuting offenders. This draft strategy sets out our local vision to tackling domestic abuse. What you tell us will help ensure we are getting our response right.”

“I also want residents who are struggling at home to know that support is always available, and how to access it. If you are finding family life difficult, please reach out. Our partners at Paragon are there for you, whatever your age and no matter what time of day it is.”

Councillor Molly Rennie, Dorset Councillor who leads on domestic abuse work, said: “We want people affected by domestic abuse to come forward, speak out and be heard. You are not alone. We know that domestic abuse comes in many forms. It can involve physical violence, but it can also be psychological.  This type of abuse leaves no marks or scars but can cause victims to experience fear or loss of freedom.   The home should be a safe place for everyone, but for some – it is a place of fear and danger.“

“The consultation is vitally important to ensure our residents can have their say and tell us their views before the draft strategy is published in January next year.  We are really interested to hear your views so please take time to complete our short survey.”

The consultation will run for 4 weeks, from Monday 15 November to midnight on Sunday 12 December 2021.

If you are affected by domestic abuse, call the Paragon domestic abuse helpline on 0800 032 5204*, 24 hours a day, or search online for ‘DVA help Dorset’ or visit the website for contact details.
