The Vale Pantry in Sturminster Newton recently became an official charity (congratulations!) It offers low-priced food and support for people who need a bit of help.
Membership is open to anyone in North Dorset struggling to make ends meet. Members pay £6 for a weekly shop worth approximately £25 and the Pantry works closely with food banks to help people before crisis hits or as they come out of crisis.
There is a direct referral system to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and staff can become advocates for some families with the various departments at Dorset Council. They also work closely with the medical centre and people are referred to and from there.
More recently a support group has been set up for families with autistic children whom often become isolated and this often starts in the time preceding a diagnosis.
