Look below to find Young People and Children. More specific help follows that with everything from Autistic Spectrum to Mental Health at Work to Veterans.
general practices
The first point of call if you feel you need some help with your mental health is usually with your GP Practice. A GP or other practitioner will establish if you need talking therapy, medication, referral to someone else or just talk through what you want and how you feel.
Many surgeries now offer several services and other professionals to see as well as doctors. The Blackmore Vale Practice currently has a Senior Mental Health Peer Support Specialist, Jack Galbraith, with whom appointments can be made and you will be able to be referred from there to other agencies as appropriate.
A Social Prescribing Team is often based at the Surgeries and can offer signposting and practical help. Liz Rose, Jennifer Churcher, Debbie Martin and Keith Harrison are the team for the Vale Primary Care Network (PCN). This consists of the surgeries at Gillingham, Shaftesbury and Sturminster Newton. Working with them are Health Champions who are volunteers, DBS checked and trained to assist, have ideas and provide services such as Peer Support Groups and Information Hubs.
Currently Groups are: Fibromyalgia, Chronic Pain and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome which is currently a telephone chat group but hopes to meet again at Abbey View Medical Centre (Contact Liz Rose) and a Mindfulness/Meditation Group currently on Zoom contact [email protected] or 07956292962. Contact the Social Prescribing team for the latest news on groups and events.
Help & Care are a service provided in partnership with the NHS and Dorset Mental Health Forum and is often at a GP practice such as Abbey View Medical Centre or sometimes another community facility. Link worker, Ellis Ford and, Self Management Coach, Emily Brown are the team at the Vale PCN . Self-management coaches are professionals who will work with you to help you feel confident about managing your health and its impact on your day-to day life. Link workers, can help you connect to your local community; whether it is signposting or supporting you to access services.

Participation in arts and culture makes communities feel safer and stronger, adds to health and wellbeing and reduces social isolation.’ (Create, Arts Council England, 2015).
My name is Sue and I have been running Making Space at the Band Hall in Shaftesbury for a couple of years. Making Space is not about perfecting skills…but a place to connect with your creative, playful self. No right or wrong, no success or fail, no judging.
The sessions are informal, there is a set activity but it’s not obligatory. You can read a book from the craft library, listen to my record collection, from David Cassidy to Tchaikovsky, or enjoy tea and cake.
I really am not biased when I say that everyone who comes along is friendly and welcoming. We share our strengths and learn from each other.
If you would like more information please contact Sue by phone or email. 07794530986. [email protected]

Mental Health Chaplaincy Services in Dorset
“Chaplaincy services are available to all patients, visitors and staff across all Dorset HealthCare sites and services. Ill health often makes people reflect on what is important to them, and chaplaincy is here to meet your spiritual and religious needs – whatever your beliefs. You may wish to speak with someone who understands the language of faith, or talk with someone about things that are important to you. We can make contact with faith communities and leaders on your behalf. We have ‘spirituality leads’ at a number of sites. The Trust Chaplain visits all our sites and units on a regular basis, and is supported by chaplaincy volunteers.”
