Ask How I Am
Supporting emotional health among people
living with long-term conditions

10-11am, Wednesday 16 June

Ask How I Am: Supporting emotional health among people living with long-term conditions, a report and campaign calling for compassionate conversations between all healthcare professionals and people living with physical ill health.

“The close link between mental and physical health is well known, with people who live with long-term physical conditions twice as likely to have poor mental health as those who do not. But COVID-19 has likely worsened the problem. Many of those classed as extremely clinically vulnerable and advised to shield have long-term conditions. The pandemic has disrupted their medical care and access to support while creating new health-related anxieties. And once again, people and communities with the least resources and greatest adversities have seen the biggest impacts on their mental and physical health.

During the pandemic, we worked with the Centre for Mental Health to speak with people living with long-term conditions, their family members and the healthcare professionals who work with them. We wanted to better understand the relationships between having a long-term illness and people’s emotional and mental wellbeing, and to identify ways of improving people’s experiences and outcomes.”
